Harcourt Trophies

2nd Grade

This year I started doing inclusion with my 2nd graders for part of the day.  Our 2nd grade uses Trophies, so I created some activities that were on the instructional level of my students but coordinated with the stories in the reader.  You can find some of the activities here, and more activities specific to some of the stories can be found on the linked pages.  I hope you find some things you can use in your classroom and if you have activities to share (on or below grade level), please do.

Genre Posters & Sort: This is a work in progress.  Peggy is helping me get this project together and she only has her first teacher's edition at home. (I have none)  So I'll have to add more posters and book cards as I get that information.  Hopefully that will be soon.  I want to have the whole set printed and laminated by the time school starts.

Anyway, print the genre posters and book cards on cardstock.  Laminate.  Cut out the book cards.  As you read the stories, tape the book cards to the correct poster (or use magnets).   As an extension to this activity, you can remove all the book cards and mix them up and have the students sort them back into the correct genres.  OR, you could make two copies, which is what I would do ... one for each activity.

7.22.08 - I sat down with the 2nd grade teacher that I team with yesterday to discuss the worth of this activity.  She liked it and suggested that she would like to take it even a step farther by dividing the posters into FICTION and NONFICTION.   You can create your own F and NF headers and then group the appropriate posters underneath them.

Set 1

(added a better picture of Wilson Sat Alone and updated the definition of Realistic Fiction)

Set 2

Set 3

Henry and Mudge: This idea was shared by Nikki.  She found some craft fall leaves and made "ed" words and glued them on the leaves.  The students will work in pairs and come up with a sentence using an "ed" word that's on their leaf.  They will write their sentences on sentence strips.

Use this game to work with small groups for sight word practice.  Give each student an apple tree cutout and 10 mini apple erasers for their tree.  Flash a sight word to each student in turn and if they can not read the word in 5 seconds they must pick an apple from their tree and put it in the "basket".  To increase interest in the game and make it coordinate more with the story, create cards with a boy (Henry) eating an apple that says, "Mmm .."   Sprinkle these randomly throughout the stack of words (about 3 or 4). When a student is flashed  "the Henry card", the group says in unison "Mmmm ..." and the person who's turn it is must put an apple in the basket.  Also, when the student misses a word or takes too long, the teacher indicates they have to put an apple in the basket by saying, "Mmmmm ..."  The person with the most apples left on their tree at the end wins the game!  I used this game this week with my students (and the new additions to it evolved) and the kids LOVED it.  It was the first thing they wanted to do every day!

Help! game -I made these turnip cards to use with my sight word cards to create a new game.  Print the turnip cards on cardstock, then center a 3x5 index card over them.  Trace around the index card with a pencil.  Cut out the turnip cards and they will fit perfectly into your stack of index cards.

We're going to play our sight words game like this ... I flash a sight word card to each student.  If they can read the word within 5 seconds, they get that card.  If they can't, I move to the next person.  If a turnip card comes up in the stack, the person who's turn it is says "Help me (student's name)!"  and the person who is asked to help must help them by giving them their stack of cards.  (They will need to learn the strategy of choosing a person to help them that has the most cards as opposed to their best friend, etc.)  The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins!

Below are printables for a recipe for individual cakes made in a Dixie cup.  They are then baked in an electric skillet (with the top on).  Make sure that you get the cups with the small lip on the bottom that keeps the bottom of the cup from sitting directly on the skillet.  There are also comprehension and sequencing sheets and a brief to note to parents concerning supplies included with the file.

Another idea is to have a real lemonade sale!  You could set up on the playground and sell during recess and have the kids graph their profits.  They will love it!  If there's more than one class, you can have a competition to see which class sells the most.  The class will need to decide beforehand what they'll do with the money ... a class party, a class trip, something for the classroom, or donate it to a good cause.

Cool Ali:

Provide students with sidewalk chalk and allow them to create scenes that are opposite to the current weather.  If it's cool or cold, they can draw a fire.  If it's warm or hot, they can draw rain.  Have them transfer their drawing to paper (optional) and write or discuss if their drawings made them feel warmer or cooler.

Know someone who's on the rodeo circuit or who's a bronco bustin' wanna-be?  See if they can line you up with someone to come in and show your class how to handle a rope and maybe even to rope a dummy steer ( a chair or overactive 2nd grader will work just as well! :) ).  This is also a good story to practice your Mexican Hat Dance and to break out the mariachi band and maracas and maybe have a little fiesta!  Don't forget the pinata!!!!!
